Teaching STEM Education

Why Teaching a STEM Subject Is Right for You

Do you have a passion for science, math, or computer science and want to inspire future generations?

Do you enjoy explaining abstract concepts in a way that others can understand?

Are you looking for a career path that adds flexibility to your degree — one degree, two career options?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, consider a career in teaching!

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers undergraduate STEM majors a unique opportunity to explore teaching in a hands-on way. From your very first class, you’ll work in pairs to develop and teach lessons in a local classroom — gaining real-world experience while discovering if teaching is the right fit for you.

How Does This Work with Your Degree Plan?

If you are majoring — or planning to major — in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, or computer science, you also can earn your teaching license by adding a 15-hour STEM Education minor and completing an additional 9 credit hours to meet teacher licensure requirements.

The following are suggested sequences of courses required for each bachelor's degree and teacher licensure requirements:

If you are pursuing a STEM degree outside of these five fields, you can still earn the minor and teacher license in one of those subjects. However, you will need to take certain content courses alongside your degree to qualify.
